It’s winter in New England. That means there will be at least a few days of extreme cold. Here are some tips to keep you and your property protected:
If you go outside:
- Wear layers
- Cover all extremeties.
- Mittens are better than gloves.
- Don’t stay outside for extended periods of time.
For your pets:
- Bring them inside during extreme cold.
- Provide shelter and fresh water.
- Keep salt away from paws.
For your home:
- If you have pipes on an outside wall: First, let hot and cold water drip from the faucet. Open the doors in the cabinet to allow heat to extend into that area. Make sure your house is heated to at least 55 degrees.
- If you plan to be away from your house: have someone check your home daily to make sure heat is on and pipes are ok. Also, shut off and drain the water out of the pipes.
- If your pipes freeze, never thaw a pipe with an open flame or torch. Use a hairdryer instead. Always be careful for the potential for electric shoc in and round standing water. Always make sure everyone in your household knows how to shut off the water in case a pipe bursts.
- Make sure your carbon monoxide detectors are working. Never run a generator indoors. If useing a kerosene heater, open a window slightly and follow all manufacturer’s instructions. Never use a gas oven to heat your home. If heat goes out, keep warm by closing off rooms you don’t use.
