Veterinary Clinics

Insurance for Veterinary Clinics in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts

We are a pet-friendly agency – just ask our company mascots, Scout and Lily! We take our love for animals seriously and work hard for our clients who help provide for pets including animal hospitals, kennels, pet daycares, pet funeral homes, pet grooming – mobile and non-mobile, pet product manufacturers, and pet stores. Like all businesses, we make sure you have considered liability coverages, property protections, and worker’s compensation. We also suggest you consider business interruption insurance. This can help replace your practice’s lost income if you can’t open it because of covered property damage, like a fire.

Veterinary professional liability insurance, also known as malpractice insurance or veterinary liability insurance, helps protect your practice if you’re sued for the services you provide. If one of your client’s claims you made a mistake in your service, and they suffer damages or financial loss, professional liability insurance can help cover your legal defense costs. If you store your clients’ and employees’ confidential information at your veterinarian practice such as contact information and payment details, data thieves may target this type of information, or one of your employees may accidentally leak it. If that happens, data breach insurance, also known as cyber coverage, may be able to help. As you can see, there are numerous risks that you need to think about protecting from. When you work with one of our licensed commercial agents, we will review these options with you so you can make an informed decision on what makes sense for your business.

Veterinary Clinics – Insurance FAQs

1. What insurance does a veterinary clinic need?

At a minimum: General Liability, Professional Liability (Malpractice), Commercial Property, Workers’ Comp, and Animal Bailee coverage. You may also need Cyber Liability and Commercial Auto if you offer mobile or transport services.

2. What is Veterinary Professional Liability?

Also called Malpractice Insurance, it protects vets and staff from lawsuits alleging mistakes in diagnosis, treatment, surgery, or advice—even if you did everything right.

3. Does General Liability cover injuries to pets?

No. General Liability covers injuries to people and damage to their property—but Animal Bailee covers injury, escape, or death of animals in your care, custody, or control.

4. What is Animal Bailee Insurance?

This specialty coverage pays if a client’s pet is injured, lost, or dies while at your facility—during grooming, boarding, or treatment. It’s critical for most veterinary practices.

5. Do we need insurance if we rent our space?

Yes. You’ll need to insure your business personal property, medical equipment, improvements you made, and liability exposures. Your landlord’s policy only covers the building.

6. What if a client slips in the waiting room?

General Liability helps cover medical bills and legal costs if a client slips, trips, or falls while visiting your practice.

7. Is Workers’ Comp required for vet clinic staff?

Yes, if you have employees. It covers injuries from bites, lifting, or exposure to chemicals or zoonotic diseases.

8. What if we have mobile vet services?

You’ll need Commercial Auto insurance for your vehicle(s), and make sure your General Liability and Professional Liability cover off-site services.

9. Do we need Cyber Liability if we use cloud-based records?

Yes. If you store client and pet data, payment info, or medical records, Cyber Liability is a must—even for small practices.

10. What if we board animals overnight?

You’ll need Property coverage for cages, kennels, and overnight areas, and your Animal Bailee coverage should reflect boarding activities.

11. Does my policy cover specialty equipment like X-ray machines?

Yes, under Commercial Property, but high-value equipment should be properly listed and insured for replacement cost.

12. How can we manage insurance costs?

Bundle policies, implement safety procedures, and work with an agent who understands veterinary risks and can place you with the right carriers.
