Sharing a nanny for your kids? It’s important to think about the risks involved.

Many families are deciding to share child care costs by hiring one nanny or caregiver who comes to one house to watch the children of two families. In theory, this makes a lot of sense. The kids enjoy time together. The parents can share daycare expenses. The Nanny can enjoy full-time employment.

But, it isn’t without risk. If you hire a nanny to watch your own children, in your own home, typically your homeowner’s insurance policy has worker’s compensation coverages for that situation. But, when you have a nanny watching kids from different families, this is typically considered a “business”. This now means your personal homeowner’s policy won’t cover related claims. These claims could include things like injuries to the other family’s children or the nanny or a car accident while the children are present in the car.

So, before you hire that nanny, do your homework.
